Frio UK

There is a range of items that I have found useful over the years and might be useful to you if you need to travel with insulin. I have used a number of different sized cooling products for trips of different lengths over the years and the travel wallets from Frio UK have been very effective and simple to use. You simply soak them in water and a gel inside will keep your insulin at safe temperatures for a couple of days.

This was an essential item on my trip around West Africa during which I spent prolonged periods of time in the desert, in towns and camps without electricity so their wallets were vital as all I needed to keep the insulin cool was water. They are well designed and also re-usable, you just dry them out then soak them again to keep your insulin cool, very handy products which I highly recommend.

HJ Hall Socks

I have always thought a sock was a sock and have just bought the 10 for £6 packs available everywhere but I was approached by HJ Hall (who have been making socks for more than 130 years) to try some of their sock range and my eyes were opened to a whole new sock reality. They sent me their Cotton Diabetic model, which is literally the most comfortable sock I have ever worn and they also sent the Flysafe model, which I haven’t flown with yet but I can tell they will do just what is required when my feet start swelling at those soaring altitudes. Flicking through their brochure they have a range of features such as cushioning in various areas, different types of seam, socks with an anti-bacterial function or ventilation and a number of different natural fibres used.
So whether you’re diabetic or not, if you wish to take care of your feet then you will most probably find something to keep those delicate slabs of meat protected and comfortable.

Diabetic Cook Book

‘Diabetic Cooking For One and Two’

by Michelle Berriedale-Johnson

I consider myself a novice cook and as I am on the road so much I don’t have much opportunity for cooking, however I found the recipes simple and easy to follow as well as being damn tasty, I just wish there had been a recipe that involved those little golden flakes of joy.

This book has some really interesting combinations, my favourite was the ‘Pepper, pear and anchovy salad’ and there are dishes from around the world such as Ajwar from the former Yugoslavia and Bobotie from South Africa. There are also excellent tips about the beneficial properties of different foods for diabetics and despite being a diabetic for 26 years I learnt things about foods that I didn’t know before.

A great book which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.
